Ylistö Bridge connecting University of Jyväskylä campuses (Owner: JYU)

We are pleased to announce that the 38th International Conference on Psychology and the Arts will be held at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, June 29—July 4, 2022. The conference is sponsored by the PsyArt Foundation (www.psyart.org) and the University of Jyväskylä (www.jyu.fi). Our hosts are M.A. Paavo Manninen of PsyArt and the University of Jyväskylä and Dr. Aino-Maija Lahtinen of PsyArt.

The organizers of the PsyArt 2022 call for papers dealing with any application of psychology—including psychoanalysis, object relations, feminist, Jungian, or Lacanian approaches, cognitive psychology, or neuroscience—to the study of literature, film and visual media, painting, sculpture, music, performance, or the other arts. The conference is convivial and draws scholars from around the world. We also warmly welcome conferees who do not present papers. A maximum of 75 papers will be accepted for presentation.

Abstract submissions: deadline for abstract submissions is May 1, 2022.

Registration fees: regular registration fees are due by May 15, 2022. Late registration fees are due by June 1, 2022. Late registration fees will NOT be accepted after June 1, 2022.

Note: the calculated conference registration fees are based on US dollar (USD) to euro (EUR) exchange rates calculated at the time this program was built in October 2021. These exchange rates fluctuate, so the prices will have slight variations at the time of your registration. USD represents the fixed price for registration fees. EUR represents the fixed price for hotel accommodation.

Your registration fee includes the following benefits:

  • attendance at all panel sessions
  • coffee breaks

We will visit The Old Church of Petäjävesi, World Heritage Church of UNESCO, renowned worldwide as a masterpiece of Scandinavian architecture.

In the small city of Mänttä, we will take guided tours in the Serlachius museums. The Gösta Museum showcases contemporary art as well as the pearls of the Golden Age of Finnish art from the Fine Arts Foundation’s collection. The second museum is located in the former head office of the historical forest combine G.A. Serlachius Ltd. In the Gustaf Museum, one can acquaint oneself with the colorful history and magnificent architecture of the building.

Papers should be short, 20 minutes at most. Please observe the time limit. Normal speaking rate is 140 words per minute, and, for clarity, a scholarly presentation should be somewhat slower for the purpose of speaking at the pace of audience comprehension. Please try to limit or avoid jargon. Our standard 20-minute limit allows you to speak about 2400 words or eight to ten pages maximum. An additional ten minutes are allotted for discussion of each paper, usually at the end of the session. The moderator is responsible for keeping speakers to 20 minutes. The moderator speaks last, and it is therefore in his/her/their interest to maintain the schedule.

English is the conference language. We recommend that any speakers who are not native speakers of English accompany their talks with a PowerPoint presentation.

If you submit your paper for publication after the conference, at that time it can be as long or short as you like.

Please prepare an abstract, 150 words maximum. The deadline for sending the abstract is May 1, 2022. Send your abstract to psyart@jyu.fi. If your abstract is accepted, registration details will follow.

Student Fellowships

The PsyArt Foundation is offering up to two fellowship scholarships:

1. Norman and Jane Holland Travel Fellowship of $500 / €430 for outstanding graduate student papers (prior to completing the Ph.D.). These can be awarded only once per person, but you can apply every year until you win. To be considered for a fellowship, once your abstract has been accepted to the conference, please send the complete text of your paper by March 31, 2022, to the PsyArt Vice-President, Paavo Manninen, at psyart@jyu.fi. No recommendations are necessary.

2. In memoriam of our longtime Vice President, Andrew Gordon, the PsyArt Foundation also offers one Andrew Gordon Fellowship of $500 / €430 for Ph.D. students who are participating at the conference for the first time. Allocation of scholarship is on a first-come, first-served basis. A supporting letter from the supervisor is necessary. To be considered for a fellowship, send your conference abstract and supporting letter by March 31, 2022, to the PsyArt Vice-President, Paavo Manninen, at psyart@jyu.fi.

Registration Form 2022
The deadline for sending us your title and abstract is May 1, 2022, or when we have 75 accepted abstracts, registration forms, and registration fees, whichever comes sooner. Once you receive notice that your abstract is accepted, you will be notified and can then pay your fees to be assured a place at the conference.

For each person attending the conference, please fill out a separate online form and pay the registration fee. Please indicate clearly “No Paper” if that is the case. Otherwise indicate the title and abstract below.

For a complete registration, we require three items:

  1. A completed registration form(see below) including paper title.
  2. Brief abstract of paper (150 words maximum), if you are giving a paper. These abstracts enable us to decide if your paper is acceptable for the conference and then to place your paper in an appropriate session. We also publish them online.
  3. A registration fee. See registration payment details below.

  • Ensure your email address is typed correctly to receive a response. If, by May 15, 2022, you are not receiving e-mails from us, let us know.
  • Do not assume that some currency arrangement you made the previous year is still effective.
  • Do not leave your registration for someone else to complete unless you are a guest, i.e., a child under 18, friend, or family member attending as a non-presenter.
  • Ensure that we have your complete registration (all three items) and your correct e-mail address. Fill out a separate form and pay for each person attending.
  • If you require a travel visa, please let us know right away if you need a special letter of invitation from the University of Jyväskylä (note: not from the PsyArt Foundation); the visa application process sometimes takes months.

Weather in Finland

Jyväskylä can be easily reached by train, bus or plane. For international travellers, we recommend flying to Helsinki Airport, an international airport from where there are direct train and bus connections to Jyväskylä nearly every hour. Helsinki Airport has around 50 regularly operating airlines. The airport has around 80 scheduled destinations to other parts of Europe and 21 direct long-haul routes to Asia, the Middle East, and North America.

By train and bus

The train and bus connections are excellent with several daily connections between Helsinki and Jyväskylä. The train journey from Helsinki to Jyväskylä takes about 3.5 hours and the bus takes about 3.5 to 4.5 hours. Both trains and buses arrive and depart from Jyväskylä Travel Centre, located in the city centre. The cost of a one-way ticket is approx. €10-40 (EUR) depending on the time of the day.

By plane

Jyväskylä Airport is situated in Tikkakoski, approximately 20 minutes’ drive from Jyväskylä. NyxAir operates flights to Jyväskylä from Helsinki Airport roughly twice a day and the flight takes about 50 minutes. There is no shuttle bus service between the airport and the city centre, nor taxi station; therefore, it is necessary to order a taxi to the airport in advance. The cost of a taxi drive from the airport to the city is approx. €50 (EUR).

Other possibilities

Tampere-Pirkkala Airport is an international airport that also has flights by Finnair, SAS, Air Baltic, and Ryanair. From Tampere, Jyväskylä can be easily reached by train or bus; the journey from Tampere to Jyväskylä takes roughly 1.5 hours.
